The real difference: purge waste
The headline spec everyone quotes is slot count, but the one that shows up in your filament bill is purge. A single-hotend system (AMS, MMU, CFS) has to flush the old color out of the nozzle on every change — a purge tower or discarded "poop." On a color-dense model that waste can rival the part.
